Microsoft sends invites for Oct. 29 Windows Phone 8 event

Microsoft has been sending out invites for the launch event of the Windows 8 OS on Oct. 26 and the reveal of Windows Phone 8 Oct. 29.

The event’s going down at 10 a.m. PDT in San Francisco, nearly 3,000 miles from its W8 New York City event a few days before.

A lot of phones running the Windows Phone 8 OS will be released including HTC’s Windows Phone 8X and Windows Phone 8S to Nokia’s Lumia 920 and 820. Included in this list will also be Samsung Ativ S.

Nokia to unveil Windows Phone 8 handset on September 5?

Nokia may be launching a Windows Phone 8 handsets at a special trade event in New York on September 5, according to rumours. The Finnish manufacturer has a partnership with Microsoft and is now concentrating all its effects on the Windows Phone operating system, after ditching its in-house Symbian smartphone platform.

According to Guardian’s telecoms correspondent Juliette Garside, Nokia may unveil its latest handsets in New York, tweeting: “Big Nokia media event in New York on 5 September with Stephen Elop.

New SimCity announced for Mac, PC beta coming soon

Electronic Arts announced during its Gamescom 2012 press conference that a new SimCity will release for Mac as well as on PC early next year. The Mac version will be available through EA’s distribution service, Origin, which is receiving its own Mac client this year. EA has promised that SimCity on Mac “will feature the same deep, rich gameplay that will define the PC experience as players on both platforms compete or collaborate to create a new world, together.”

The publisher’s comments suggest that cross-platform play will be possible between both the PC and Mac versions, both of which are expected to drop in February 2013.

Multi-player plays a strong role in the new SimCity, as each city contributes to a global in-game economy that will impact all players.

EA has announced it will be offering a closed beta of SimCity for PC players. The game is not coming to Mac too, the beta will only be available on PC.

Users can submit a beta application for a chance to play and offer feedback the game ships next year.

Acer Aspire S7 Windows 8 touch screen release detailed

It’s been two months since Acer revealed the Aspire S7 Ultrabook at Computex 2012, and the Taiwanese manufacturer has already revealed pricing and release info for the new device.

The Aspires S7′s release date has been confirmed as the end of September, and the ultrabook will drop for $1,465 (£1,149.99). This meanse that the initial runs will be equipped with Windows 7, as windows 8 will release on October 26, three to four weeks after the Aspire S7 launch.

The Specs:

- Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge Processor
- 128GB SSD Storage
- 4GB RAM
- HDMI, USB and Memory Card Readers ports
- 12-hour battery cycle and backlit keyboard
- 11.6 to 13.3-inch

The ultrabook can be upgraded, including more RAM and SSD space and the option for a Core i7 chip.

In addition, it turns out the Aspire S7′s much-hyped touchscreen is another optional add-on, though there’s no word yet on how much extra it’s going to cost. TechRadar reached out to Acer to confirm details on the optional touchscreen.

Latest HP Ultrabook can’t get out the door

HP is having difficulty fulfilling orders for its latest and greatest Ultrabook, the Envy Spectre XT.

The HP Envy Spectre XT was announced in May, with a launch date of June 8. However, now at the end of July, orders are still backed up.

An HP spokesperson said; “HP Envy Spectre XT orders are taking longer to fulfill than HP expected”. “We are contacting all customers who have placed orders to provide updates expected delivery dates.”

HP Envy Spectre XT is a top end ultrabook and is the firm’s thinnest and lightest to date. The Specs are:

- 3.07 lbs in weight
- 14.5 mm thickness
- 13.3-inch display with 1366×768 resolution
- Intel’s Ivy Bridge
- 4GB of RAM
- 128GB Solid State Drive
- 8 Hours Battery Life.

The expected shipping date has been set to August 28, so orders can still be placed.

Apple Allegedly Kills Safari for Windows

According to a published report, Apple appears to have mostly scrubber its site of any download links to the Windows version of Safari in time for today’s Safari 6 release.

5.1.7 version of Safari can still be downloaded after a little bit of searching through Apple’s support pages and other forum/download links.

Speculation as to why Apple’s nixed the references includes the possibility the Apple does not want to devote resources to a Windows port.

As the Safari 6 is more tied into the OS X operating system with features such as password pane apple has chosen the right time to cut of the download links for Windows.

Apple Release OS X Mountain Lion System Upgrade

Apple have announced in there third quarter earnings release that the latest version of its Mac operation system will be released on Wednesday.

OS X Mountain Lion makes it easier to share material to social networks and also introduces a notification panel similar to the ones on smartphones.

Apple first announced the latest update to there operating system in February. The update will come to there desktops and laptops. The new operating system will feature the iCloud internet storage service; the introduction of the iMessage service allowing messaging between the Macbook, iMacs, iPod, iPad and iPhones.

Brian Blau a research director at tech research firm Gartner said, “There are a lot of new feature but this is not a major upgrade like the last version of Lion was.”
